Northern Cyprus: A Mediterranean Jewel

Living abroad has become as popular for American citizens as it is for those who live in Europe. A common practice, many people own property in exotic and luxuriant places around the world, usually in warm and sunny locations like the Caribbean or the Mediterranean. One place which is currently seeing an influx of tourists and emigrants is the country of Northern Cyprus.

Where Is North Cyprus?

The island of Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and it sits the furthest to the east. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia are the only ones that are bigger. Cyprus is forty miles from Turkey, sixty miles from Syria, and an astounding two-hundred fifty miles from Egypt. Believe it or not, the Mediterranean is that big.

The country of Northern Cyprus lies at the northern edge of the island, taking up thirty-six percent of the entire island. It’s approximately one hundred miles long and forty miles wide at the widest part and has an area of 1,357 square miles.

Northern Cyprus is only one section of the entire island. The countries actual name is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, but only the Turkish and the inhabitants of Northern Cyprus insist on that name. It is not recognized as a separate entity by the international community. The rest of the island is known as the Republic of Cyprus and it shares three sections with the United Kingdom who operate two military bases there and the United Nations who control a buffer zone between the Greek and Turkish residents. Although hostilities between the two sections of the island have calmed over the years, there are still working boundary crossings on the island. Rent Villas in Paphos.
